WHO AM I?

"It is a salutary discipline to get up every morning and get to work on a manuscript with fair hopes to see it finished and published, and the fate which awaits it. One always thinks of the chances that any new book will make its way among a multitude of others. Every author knows what pains he had and what experiences he endured and what heartache he suffered.

I have written and published four novels which I am introducing on this site. Much thought had gone into their composition; they had been carefully written. I seek my reward in the pleasure of my work and in the release from the burden of praise or censure, failure or success.

Writing historical fiction is a special challenge. It is time and energy consuming and takes a lot of knowledge. My aim in writing these types of books is to educate, divert and enchant. A particular history can be a fascinating tale. I believe I have succeeded in crafting good stories for my audience to enjoy.

My brief biography:

My name is Dimitrij Grčar, born 25 December 1946 in Ljubljana, what is now Slovenia. My life started in postwar Germany. I was schooled in various places, as my family kept moving. Among them in the United States. I graduated law in Ljubljana and devoted my career to international trade relations. As an expert on trade policy, I collaborated with many international organisations, and have conducted missions as an expert in many countries on all continents. I have had roles as chairman of committees and a diplomat.

I began writing fiction upon my retirement. I am living in Slovenia.

PUBLISHER'S POINT OV VIEW

Dimitrij Grčar is a Slovenian author known for weaving emotionally complex narratives into the fabric of 20th-century European history. With a background in diplomacy and a lifelong passion for literature, Grčar brings a unique perspective to stories shaped by war, exile, resistance, and identity.

He writes with precision, restraint, and empathy — crafting characters who do not merely survive history, but challenge it. Whether it’s a lone journalist facing the Nazi invasion of Belgrade, a haunted photojournalist navigating post-war Europe, or a misunderstood explorer tracing the edges of the colonial world, Grčar’s protagonists are never passive. They see. They speak. They remember.

His novels often spotlight outsiders — women whose inner strength carries them through systems built to erase them. In doing so, Grčar creates fiction that is both deeply personal and historically resonant.

Grčar’s works include:

He lives between Ljubljana and the European literary imagination — somewhere between forgotten headlines and unspoken truths.
